Creating a bright and airy bedroom using curtains

Creating a bright and airy bedroom using curtains

We’re currently in the process of looking for ideas to decorate our spare room. It’s quite a small space, the smallest room of the house, but with a bit of flexible thinking there is space to fit a double bed, so with the thought that guests don’t really need too much storage space, we’ve arrived at the conclusion that it could become a useful guest room.

I live a long way from home so we have guests come to visit A LOT, because of that I want to create something that’s really tranquil and inviting. Anyone that comes to stay has to travel a long way to get here, so the least we can do is provide a relaxing space. With that in mind I thought the best thing to do would be to make the most of the natural light by introducing colour scheme which was light and airy, incorporating natural textures and pastel colours wherever possible.

I love this modern minimalist bedroom from Pinterest.

Bedding

I always think bedding sets the tone of a room as it’s the bed which has the largest impact. I’ve been browsing the bedding section of my favourite interiors stores and am now brimming with ideas so I’ve shared a few of them below:

Curtains for Dressing the Window

If bedding sets the tone of a room, then I think the way you dress the window frames it. Besides the bedding, curtains are the first thing you’ll see when you walk into a room, albeit probably on a more subconscious level. The wrong choice of curtain can make a huge difference to the ambiance so it’s important to get it right. We’re lucky in that our spare room is on the south side of the house, meaning it gets a lot of light in the mornings. I want to capitalise on this by creating something bright and airy and to do that I wanted curtains that would let as much light in as possible. I found these voile curtains by Yorkshire Linen CO and they were exactly what I was looking for. Light weight and bright white, they’ll let in a lot of natural light, without being too imposing on the room. Floor-length curtains can also make a room look larger, which is especially helpful in smaller rooms. You can find the rest of the voile range here

To ensue our guest get a sound night sleep and aren’t awoken at the crack of dawn by Mr Sunshine with his hat on, we will install a black out blind behind them.

Accessories

The final thing on my shopping list for this room will be the perfect accessories. Art is always really important to me as I like to create something interesting on the walls. I love these prints by Dan Hobday Art, available on Etsy.

I’d also like to add a rug to provide additional depth and texture and on this front I’ve narrowed it down to two options, the final choice being dependant on our choice of bedding. The first option will be to move our La Redoute Berber rug from the living room up to the spare room and have it poking out from the bottom of the bed, or I’ll buy something similar from the high street, such as the one below from H&M.

The second option is to go with a more neutral colour palette and stick to natural colours such as this Jute ‘Lohals’ Rug from Ikea. Either way it will be the final thing we decide, but it’s always good to know whats out there.

Some beautiful ideas – we are about to embark on a loft extension and I have a similar palette in mind for our new bedroom (whoop whoop!). Love all your picks – did you know that La Redoute rug has it’s own instagram account?! It’s so popular, and I can see why…

I love all of these choices. It’s amazing what a difference the right colour scheme and soft furnishings can make to a small space.
